HIGH SCHOOL FACULTY
Dr. Jerry Shawhan - Advanced Math
12th Grade Pre-Calculus
Dr. Jerry Shawhan earned a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering in 1958 and Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1966 from the University of Cincinnati. He began his career as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cincinnati. Recently, he retired as Treasurer and Group Executive at Cincom Systems where he was employed for 40 years. He now teaches upper level mathematics part time at the Academy. Long-time parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church, Dr. Shawhan sings in the choir and his wife serves as sacristan. They have seven children and 45 grandchildren.
Mr. Jonathan Sapp
5th-12th Grade Latin and Science
Jonathan joined the Immaculate Conception Faculty in 2019 and teaches 6th and 8th grade Latin as well as middle school and high school science. Originally from Atlanta, Jonathan graduated summa cum laude from Columbia University in 2009, where he majored in German Literature and also took extensive coursework in Latin and Ancient Greek, Romance languages, philosophy, literature and history. After completing his undergraduate work, Jonathan studied toward a master’s in music at the Freie Universität in Berlin, Germany for two years. Jonathan is also an farmer and entrepreneur, having founded his own farm company, For Real Farms. Jonathan speaks German, Italian, French, Latin and Ancient Greek and is a classically trained pianist and tenor.
Mr. Richard Ayres - Latin and Greek Teacher
7th-12th Grade Latin and Greek
Mr. Rick Ayres has 42 years of teaching experience in English, French, Latin, and Chinese. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in French with a minor in English from the University of Kentucky, and Master of Arts in Teaching in Linguistics from the University of Louisville. After a long service at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, he joined the Academy in September 2014 to teach Latin. He also serves on the Classical Curriculum Accreditation Team. Having led many student travel groups to China, Tibet, Russia, Australia, and France, he brings a global perspective to the classroom. Mr. Ayres and his family are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.
ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL FACULTY
Mrs. Heather Reist - Math
7th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Advanced Math
Mrs. Heather Reist is in her fourth year of teaching at the Academy. She not only teaches multiple math classes, but drives the overall strategy of the math curriculum as a member of the Classical Curriculum Accreditation team. She has a Bachelor of Arts in middle grade education with a focus in mathematics and social studies from Northern Kentucky University where she will complete a Master of Arts in teaching with a focus in gifted and talented education in the spring of 2018. Before joining our staff, Mrs. Reist taught 8th grade math at Twenhofel Middle School for four years. Mrs. Reist and her husband, an Academy alumnus, have two young children, and are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.
7rd & 4th Grade Latin, 5th & 6th Grade History
Mrs. Winner graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Modern Languages from the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada. Before moving to Cincinnati, Mrs. Winner was pursuing her Bachelor of Education from the University of Lethbridge while working as a student teacher in elementary grade schools and working a summer teaching English as a Second Language. Her husband is a 2010 graduate of the Academy. This will be her first year as a full-time member of the Academy faculty.
Miss Gemma Bruner
6th Grade, 5th Grade Latin, 7th & 8th Grade History
Miss Bruner graduated from the Academy with a 4.35 GPA and subsequently joined the Academy as a staff member in 2018. In that first year she worked in the Academy Office and served as an administrative assistant. But Miss Bruner has now joined the Academy’s teaching faculty.
Mrs. Sheri Schoech - Math
5th & 6th Grade Math
Mrs. Sheri Schoech has served on Immaculate Conception Academy staff as a teachers aide and teacher for our Math program for the past five years. Prior to that she homeschooled her children for over 10 years and help tutor other students. Mrs. Schoech and her husband moved to Cincinnati in 2007 to enroll their children in the Academy She and her family are parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church.
Mrs. Valerie Orza - 4th Grade
5th, 6th, 7th & 8th Grade
Mrs. Valerie Orza is a graduate of St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a bachelor's degree in English and is a licensed K-12 teacher in the state of Ohio. Although this is Mrs. Orza's first year teaching in her own classroom, she has been in the field of education for quite some time. She provided her own children with the foundation of a Classical Christian Education homeschool experience. For the past few years she has also been a substitute teacher at Norwood View. Mrs. Orza is actively involved in the Norwood community. She founded the Norwood Community Orchestra and acts as the group's principal violinist. Additionally, Mrs. Orza is a candidate for City Council.
Mrs. Claire Flum
Mrs. Flum graduated from Miami University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Special Education. She is dual-licensed in grades K-12 Mild/Moderate and Moderate/Severe Special Education, and holds “highly qualified status” in Middle School Language Arts and Middle School Math. Prior to teaching at the Academy, Mrs. Flum taught online Special Education classes and also taught children with severe emotional and behavioral disorders at St. Joseph Orphanage. Before becoming the fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Flum also taught second grade at the Academy from 2014-2018.
Mrs. Lisa Capetillo - 3rd Grade
Mrs. Lisa Capetillo has served on Immaculate Conception Academy's staff in numerous capacities for the past 13 years. She has an Associate's degree in Applied Science, and is a Registered Dietetic Technician. At the Academy she has worn many hats, as a teacher, lunch and recess monitor, and librarian. Lisa also assists as Head Coach of the Girls Varsity Soccer team. Her husband is an active volunteer serving as groundskeeper for the church and school complex, and Assistant Coach for Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer teams. The Capetillos are parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church and their son is enrolled at the Academy.
Miss Mary Margaret Shawhan - 2nd Grade
Miss Mary Margaret Shawhan, a former Academy student joined the Academy staff in 2016 as an elementary teacher assistant. She taught seventh and eight grade history this past year. Miss Shawhan was homeschooled, graduating in 2013, then worked at a children's resale store and as a receptionist. She has also volunteered her time serving at a pro-life resale shop. She is a lifelong parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church.
Miss Maria Bischel
Academy Class of 2015
Miss Bischel graduated from Miami University in 2019 with a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education. She is licensed in the state of Ohio as an Early Childhood resident educator. Before becoming the first grade teacher, Miss Bischel served as a part-time teaching assistant at the Academy in 2017.
Miss Victoria Montesano
Kindergarten, Elementary Physical Education, Girls’ Soccer Coach
Miss Montesano earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Development and Psychology from the State University of New York at Albany. She has since completed specialized course work in Special Education, Literacy, and General Education.
Mrs. Terry Brinkman
Elementary Reading Tutor
Mrs. Brinkman joined the Academy faculty in 2018, and as an IDA Certified Orton-Gillingham Tutor, she works with elementary students on their reading skills. She graduated from the University of Cincinnati before working as a teacher at Antonelli College and St. Vincent de Paul elementary. In 2008 Mrs. Brinkman completed her Orton-Gillingham certification at the Dyslexia Center of Cincinnati, and then tutored at St. Bernard Elementary School until 2018.
Mrs. Cathy Montesano
Mrs. Cathy Montesano joined academy staff in 2018. Mrs. Montesano and her family relocated to Cincinnati from Filmore, NY to enroll her three children in the Academy. She formerly worked as x-ray technician and registration clerk at a Hospital in Olean, NY. Mrs. Montesano and her family are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.
Mr. Steve Wittman
College and Career Counselor
Mr. Steven E. Wittman, Sr. is a retired Procter & Gamble executive, with over 40 years of leadership and management experience in both the military and civilian business sector. Mr. Wittman is a 1977 graduate of the United States Air Force Academy. In 1981, he earned his Masters in Business Administration from Arizona State University. From 1977 to 1985, Mr. Wittman was a U.S. Air Force officer, instructor pilot, academic instructor, and aircraft commander. He was responsible for instructing student pilots in the aircraft and the classroom, and for leading aircraft flight missions throughout the world. Mr. Wittman has amassed over 3,000 flying hours in T-37, T-38, and C-141 aircraft. In 1985, Mr. Wittman left the active duty Air Force, joining The Procter & Gamble Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. Over his 34 years at Procter & Gamble, his career was highlighted by a variety of management and executive roles in Marketing and Sales. Mr. Wittman retired from P&G in February 2019. Mr. Wittman hails from Liberty Township, Ohio, and is married to his wife of 42 years, Betsy. He and Betsy have eight children, ranging in age from 40 to 21, all graduates of Immaculate Conception Academy.
