Dr. Jerry Shawhan - Advanced Math

12th Grade Pre-Calculus

Dr. Jerry Shawhan earned a Bachelor of Science in metallurgical engineering in 1958 and Ph.D. in Mathematics in 1966 from the University of Cincinnati. He began his career as Assistant Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cincinnati. Recently, he retired as Treasurer and Group Executive at Cincom Systems where he was employed for 40 years. He now teaches upper level mathematics part time at the Academy. Longime parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church, Dr. Shawhan sings in the choir and his wife serves as sacristan. They have seven children and 45 grandchildren.

Mrs. Cathy Koloc - Anatomy & Physiology

Mrs. Cathy Koloc - Anatomy & Physiology

12th Grade Anatomy & Physiology

Mrs. Cathy Koloc is a 1990 graduate of the University of Cincinnati with an associate degree in physical therapy. She has taught various subjects at the Academy over the past ten years, including anatomy and physiology, science, health, and Spanish. One of her greatest joys is in watching her students learn and truly understand the subject at hand. She is currently teaching part time, while also working in rehabilitation at geriatric and acute levels. Five of her eight children are Academy alumni, and three are currently enrolled students. Mrs. Koloc and her family are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.

Mr. Richard Ayres - Latin Teacher

Mr. Richard Ayres - Latin Teacher

5th-12th Grade Latin

Mr. Rick Ayres has 42 years of teaching experience in English, French, Latin, and Chinese. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in French with a minor in English from the University of Kentucky, and Master of Arts in Teaching in Linguistics from the University of Louisville. After a long service at St. Xavier High School in Louisville, Kentucky, he joined the Academy in September 2014 to teach Latin. He also serves on the Classical Curriculum Accreditation Team. Having led many student travel groups to China, Tibet, Russia, Australia, and France, he brings a global perspective to the classroom. Mr. Ayres and his family are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.

Mr. Brinton Barnes - High School Science

Mr. Brinton Barnes - High School Science

9th & 10th Grade Physical Science, 11th & 12th Grade Physics, Science Fair, 9th & 10th Grade Boys Gym

Mr. Brinton Barnes is in his second year of teaching at Immaculate Conception Academy. He has a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point and a Master of Science in coastal sciences from the University of Southern Mississippi with a focus in fish ecology, reef ecology, and diets of predatory fish. He worked as an aquarist and marine educator teaching all ages in oceanography before joining our staff. Mr. Barnes brings energy and enthusiasm into the classroom, instilling in our students a healthy curiosity and enjoyment of the sciences.

Mrs. Heather Reist - Math

Mrs. Heather Reist - Math

7th Grade Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Advanced Math

Mrs. Heather Reist is in her fourth year of teaching at the Academy. She not only teaches multiple math classes, but drives the overall strategy of the math curriculum as a member of the Classical Curriculum Accreditation team. She has a Bachelor of Arts in middle grade education with a focus in mathematics and social studies from Northern Kentucky University where she will complete a Master of Arts in teaching with a focus in gifted and talented education in the spring of 2018. Before joining our staff, Mrs. Reist taught 8th grade math at Twenhofel Middle School for four years. Mrs. Reist and her husband, an Academy alumnus, have two young children, and are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Robin Boesken - Middle School Science

7th & 8th Grade Biology

Mrs. Robin Boesken attended Mount St. Joseph University where she earned an associate's degree in Liberal Arts, a bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy and a bachelor's degree in Natural Science with a concentration in Molecular Genetics and Developmental Embriology. Furthermore, Mrs. Boesken is a Master Gardener. She taught off and on at the Academy for seven years. She has now come back part time this year to teach Biology to the seventh and eighth grade class. Mrs. Boesken and her husband are parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Pat Stickel has been with the Academy for nine years, serving in a variety of elementary teaching and substitute teaching roles. Currently she is responsible for the elementary religion curriculum. Prior to joining our staff, she taught at St. Therese of the Child Jesus Academy in Cleveland.  She has also volunteered as a counselor at the St. Thomas Aquinas Summer Camp for 20 years. Mrs. Stickel is a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church and six of her grandchildren attend the Academy.

Mrs. Christie Birch is a 1994 alumna of Immaculate Conception Academy and has been with the Academy in various capacities for 12 years. Currently she teaches elementary grammar, history, and reading, as well as multiple choir classes. A 1996 graduate of Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, she previously worked as an RN with an asthma and allergy practice, and now serves as school nurse. Mrs. Birch's husband formerly served as Assistant Principal of the Academy for 10 years, and currenlty coaches the Academy baseball team. They are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church and their children attend the Academy.

Mrs. Valerie Orza is a graduate of St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn, NY. She holds a bachelor's degree in English and is a licensed K-12 teacher in the state of Ohio. Although this is Mrs. Orza's first year teaching in her own classroom, she has been in the field of education for quite some time. She provided her own children with the foundation of a Classical Christian Education homeschool experience. For the past few years she has also been a substitute teacher at Norwood View. Mrs. Orza is actively involved in the Norwood community. She founded the Norwood Community Orchestra and acts as the group's principal violinist. Additionally, Mrs. Orza is a candidate for City Council.

Mrs. Michelle VandeRyt has eleven years of teaching experience at Immaculate Conception Academy. She holds an associate degree in early childhood development and a Bachelor of Science in early childhood education from the University of Cincinnati. Mrs. VandeRyt and her husband are parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church and their two youngest children are enrolled in the Academy.

Mrs. Lisa Capetillo has served on Immaculate Conception Academy's staff in numerous capacities for the past 13 years. She has an Associate's degree in Applied Science, and is a Registered Dietetic Technician. At the Academy she wears many hats, interacting with most of our elementary students on a daily basis as a teacher, lunch and recess monitor, and librarian. Lisa also serves as Head Coach of the Girls Varsity Soccer team. Her husband is an active volunteer serving as groundskeeper for the church and school complex, and Assistant Coach for Girls and Boys Varsity Soccer teams. The Capetillos are parishioners at Immaculate Conception Church and their son is enrolled at the Academy.

Mrs. Claire Flum is in her fourth year of teaching at the Academy. A 2006 alumna of the Academy, she has a Bachelor of Science in special education from Miami University and previously taught for Ohio Distance and Electronic Learning Academy and St. Joseph’s Orphanage. Her helpful attitude and self-motivation make her invaluable to our staff. Mrs. Flum and her family are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.

Miss Abby Wittman, a 2009 alumna of the Academy, is in her fifth year as part of our faculty team. She holds a Bachelor of Science in education from Miami University, and previously worked as a substitute Kindergarten teacher for Mother Teresa Catholic Elementary School.  She has a reputation for her attention to each individual student, and for her creative teaching methods including the much-loved "Phonics Dance." Miss Wittman is an active parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Kendall Harrison is a 2000 alumna of Immaculate Conception Academy and is in her sixth year as Kindergarten teacher. She has a Bachelor of Arts in early childhood education from the College of Mount St. Joseph with a minor in special education. Before joining the Academy, she taught Kindergarten at Seven Hills School for seven years. She is the elementary mentor responsible for overseeing the faculty and students in Kindergarten through grade 3, and is part of the Classical Curriculum Accreditation Team. Mrs. Harrison’s husband, Chris, also a graduate of the Academy, coaches the Boys Varsity Basketball team. They are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church and their children attend the Academy.

Elementary Teacher Assistant, 7th & 8th Grade History Teacher's Assistant

Miss Mary Margaret Shawhan, lifelong parishioner of Immaculate Conception Church, joined the Academy staff in 2016. She was homeschooled, graduating in 2013, then worked at a children's resale store and as a receptionist. She has also volunteered her time serving at a pro-life resale shop. As an elementary teacher assistant, Miss Shawhan helps teachers with large class sizes, manages class work groups, and substitute teaches when necessary. She is always willing to lend a helping hand and is an enormous asset in our elementary school. Furthermore, she serves the Teacher's Assistant to Father Jenkins for 7th & Grade History.

Office Manager

Mrs. Judy Schultes has been managing the school office for ten years. She and her husband moved to Cincinnati in 2007 to enroll their son in the Academy. Mrs. Schultes has a background in resort management and advertising. Prior to moving here, she worked as a Sales Manager for Teischer Organization in Pennsylvania for four years. Mrs. Schultes is responsible for the overall management of the day to day office activities and communications. She and her family are parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church.

Mrs. Angela Capetillo - Bursar

Mrs. Angela Capetillo is responsible for the overall operations of financial services at the Academy and provides counsel in financial management and fiscal policies to ensure compliance. She holds a Bachelor of business administration from the University of Cincinnati with a focus in accounting, and has ten years experience as an Assistant Auditor for the State of Ohio where she reviewed financial records of tax funded governments. Mrs. Capetillo and her husband are 2002 alumni of the Academy, lifelong parishioners of Immaculate Conception Church, and their children are enrolled at the Academy.

Miss Meg Wittman, a 2005 alumna of the Academy, has been on staff for four years overseeing all fundraising efforts for both the Academy and Church. She holds an Associate of Arts in culinary arts technology from the Midwest Culinary Institute and a Bachelor of Business Administration in marketing from the University of Cincinnati. Prior to joining the Academy, she worked in development with United Way of Greater Cincinnati for four years. Miss Wittman is a parishioner and choir member of Immaculate Conception Church.
